Concert Review : Joey Fatone & AJ Mclean, A Legendary Night at Theater At MGM

On the evening of Saturday, July 20th, a sense of nostalgia pervaded as renowned boy band members Joey Fatone from *NSYNC and AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys presented their A Legendary Night Tour at The Theater At MGM in Oxon Hill, Maryland. As attendees made their way into the venue, they were greeted by the sounds of a DJ who entertained the crowd with his turntablism skills while playing iconic songs from the crowd's childhood and teenage years.

At approximately 8:10, the backing band entered the stage lightheartedly, accompanied by the theme song from the beloved teen sitcom "Saved by the Bell." The energy in the venue surged to a fever pitch as Fatone and McLean took the stage, welcomed by a raucous outpouring of applause from the adoring crowd. The performance commenced with "Pop" and "I Want You Back" by Fatone's group, followed by "Larger Than Life" by McLean's group. The vocalists alternated verses, creating an electrifying atmosphere. It was an incredible experience for fans of both groups to witness them perform each other's iconic songs.

McLean, who released solo material outside his group, then brought a lucky lady on stage for a serenade of his song "Why U, "complete with a lapdance. The duo then transitioned to a performance of iconic television theme songs with crowd suggestions in an attempt to stump their musical director, which they did when he didn't know the theme of "Sister Sister."

As an admirer of ballads, I found the subsequent segment of the performance to be particularly enjoyable. Although Fatone may not be widely acknowledged for having top-tier vocal abilities, he delivered commendable renditions of "For The Girl Who Has Everything," "I Drive Myself Crazy," and "This I Promise You." However, McClean captivated the audience with his renditions of "I'll Never Break Your Heart" and "Quit Playing Games With My Heart" from the Backstreet Boys repertoire.

AJ testified about his sobriety and presented two new songs from his forthcoming second solo album. As the evening drew to a close, the focus was on energizing the audience with Joey and AJ's renditions of New Jack Swing covers and album tracks from both groups, culminating in a performance of "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)." The energy of the event soared when the duo returned to perform the iconic "I Want It That Way" and "Bye Bye Bye."

Arguably, both individuals are no longer in the zenith of their boy band days. Nonetheless, this aspect contributes to the show's enjoyment as the duo endeavors to transport fans back to a more uncomplicated era.
