Music fans in the DMV were buzzing with anticipation for a night of Southern Soul on Sunday, September 15th, when Season 2 American Idol winner Ruben Studdard brought his Masterpiece tour to America's Legendary Music Hall, The Birchmere, in Alexandria, VA.
I had the pleasure of attending Mr. Studdard's "Ruben Studdard Sings Luther Vandross" tour a few years ago. As a devoted fan of the singer, I eagerly anticipated experiencing his musical talent once again. A skilled 3-piece band accompanied Ruben, and the instant they graced the stage, their musical synergy was palpable.
Studdard, in a touching moment, shared with the audience that his mother had a hand in curating his setlist for the night, ensuring he performed some of her favorite songs. The audience was treated to selections from Donny Hathaway and Luther Vandross, a gesture that resonated deeply with the crowd.
One of the show's standout moments was when Studdard performed songs from his own catalog. Although 'Sorry 2004' and 'Change Me' were part of the setlist, the absence of any songs from his new album left a longing in me. I was eagerly looking forward to hearing the lead singles' Masterpiece' and 'W.I.F.E.' performed live. The show ended with a soulful and moving rendition of Maze's 'Joy & Pain' by Studdard.
While Ruben may not have reached the sales heights of other Idol winner's his voice is impeccable live and I highly encourage checking out his live show if he ever in your town.
Final Grade: B+
