Concert Review : Anthony Hamilton @ The Theater At MGM

Anthony Hamilton once again demonstrated why he is one of R&B’s premier live performers during his concert at The Theater at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Having seen Hamilton several times over the years, I never miss an opportunity to catch him when he’s in town, as his concerts consistently deliver authenticity, passion, and first-class musicianship.

As fans filled the theater, anticipation steadily built. The only drawback before the music began was the absence of a DJ or opening act to engage the audience, so Hamilton took the stage roughly 35 minutes after the scheduled start time. However, once the show began, the delay quickly became an afterthought.

Dressed in jeans and a stylish black shirt, Hamilton opened with “Comin’ from Where I’m From,” followed by “Sista Big Bones” and “Best of Me.” The audience immediately rose to their feet, singing along as his outstanding band settled into a groove while Hamilton showcased his trademark dance moves and commanding stage presence.

The mood shifted beautifully with an instrumental rendition of “Tender Love,” which led into a breathtaking performance of “The Point of It All.” Hamilton reminded everyone why he remains one of the finest vocalists of his generation, delivering every note with remarkable control and emotion. After a quick wardrobe change, his background vocalists, The Tones, stepped into the spotlight with a spirited rendition of Guy’s “Piece of My Love.”

The energy picked up again as Hamilton performed favorites like “So In Love” and “Cool.” Surprisingly, he skipped his popular collaborations with hip-hop artists, choosing instead to focus on the depth of his own catalog. One of the evening’s most moving moments came during “Mercy,” a heartfelt performance that resonated deeply in light of the recent loss of another Black life.

Hamilton truly shined during the ballads. Performances of “You Made a Fool of Me,” “I’m a Mess,” and “Pray for Me” showcased the richness and maturity of his voice. At one point, he sang from a bench among the audience, creating an intimate moment that made the large theater feel surprisingly personal. Fans enthusiastically sang along throughout the night, transforming the concert into a shared celebration.

I left wishing he had delved a little deeper into his catalog. Songs like “I’ll Wait for You to Fall in Love,” “Do You Feel Me,” “Can’t Let Go,” and “Change for Me” would have made an outstanding set even stronger. The Tones also impressed with a smooth rendition of “A Heart Is a House for Love.”

Hamilton closed the evening with a stirring performance of “Something About the Name Jesus,” uplifting the audience before ending, as expected, with his signature hit, “Charlene.”

More than three decades into his career, Anthony Hamilton continues to perform with unmatched sincerity, soul, and vocal brilliance. If he is coming to your city, do not miss the opportunity to experience one of R&B’s greatest live entertainers.
