Comedic superstar Kevin Hart reunites with director Leslie Small and Netflix for his fifth special, “Kevin Hart: Acting My Age.” I had the opportunity to see the show live last year when the tour stopped in D.C., but I wanted to watch the special to see if Hart made any changes to his jokes.
Working with longtime friends and frequent writers Joey Wells and Harry Ratchford, Hart takes the stage in casual attire, and the show’s vibe recalls his early days in comedy clubs. Over the past five years, Hart has experienced both victories and losses, including the death of his father and various lawsuits.
Although the 46-year-old comedian could have easily focused his routine on these personal challenges and his growth, he wisely taps into his trademark energetic style, captivating the audience with personal stories and clever insights into everyday life.
Watching the special from the comfort of my own home, Hart’s charisma was undeniable. Interestingly, I found myself laughing more during the special at home than I did at the live show. Hart’s talent for engaging the crowd was extraordinary, particularly as Small wisely panned around the venue to capture the audience’s reactions.
With the holidays approaching, one of Hart’s early jokes about overly enthusiastic family members at dinner resonates strongly. Additionally, his commentary on the absurdity of gas station male enhancement products is sure to strike a chord with couples watching the show.
Throughout the special, Hart delivers rapid-fire punchlines that hit effectively. His physical humor, characterized by lively gestures and animated facial expressions, amplifies the laughter, allowing even straightforward jokes to resonate.
If I had one minor complaint, Hart didn’t share any stories from working on set with superstars like Woody Harrelson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Mark Wahlberg in recent years. While not all of those projects were as well-received as others, I can only imagine how much fun he had working with those actors.
While some may find Hart overrated or unfunny, his latest special provided enough laughs for me, and I look forward to watching him continue to evolve.
Final Grade: B
Kevin Hart: Acting My Age is now available to stream.
