Michelle Buteau delivers enough chuckles in her latest Netflix special

DERRICK DUNN

Michelle Buteau, the scene-stealing queen of comedy, concludes 2024 with her second Netflix special, "Michelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind," filmed at the iconic Radio City Music Hall. Directed by Page Hurwitz and Sandra Restrepo, this special showcases Buteau's vibrant performance in the city that never sleeps.

Following her appearance in the joyous comedy "Babes" earlier this spring, Buteau returns to the stage as a seasoned pro. The special starts with a playful conversation between her and one of her children as she rushes to end the call and start the show. She then steps outside to stand on the marquee, capturing the moment as a career pinnacle.

While several female comedians have headlined at Radio City, none have recorded a special there, which adds an extra layer of significance to this performance. Dressed in all black, Buteau delves into her familiar topics: motherhood, marriage, and navigating her career as a woman of color. To keep this review spoiler-free, I'll refrain from revealing too much detail, allowing potential viewers to experience it with fresh eyes.

One standout joke involves her experience working with a brand to create a cooking video that features a unique take on sweet potato casserole. Buteau recognizes that some ingredients may raise eyebrows among her fans, but she skillfully presents the story as if chatting with her friends during a girl's night with her infectious smile lighting up the stage. A successful joke perfectly sets up the punch line, and Buteau delivers knockout blows throughout her set.

Other relatable highlights include her humorous observations about the love of money, the challenge of scheduling a date night with her spouse, and her clubbing days, which she vividly recreates. However, one bit will draw the most attention: her critique of Dave Chappelle and his views on the trans community. I won't elaborate, but this segment will generate considerable discussion once the special airs.

If I had one critique, it would be that she didn't share behind-the-scenes stories from "First Wives Club" or her headlining show "Survival of the Thickest." I can only imagine the fun she had with her castmates on set. With her second comedy special, Buteau continues to ascend the ranks of women in comedy and is worth checking out for anyone needing a good laugh.

Final Grade: B
