"Transformers One" is a blast

Updated: Sep 19

Director Josh Cooley brings his imaginative eye to an iconic franchise in "Transformers One" from Paramount Pictures. The CGI animated film is written by Eric Pearson, Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari and is based on a story by Barrer and Ferrari. The film is the untold origin story of Optimus Prime (voiced by Chris Hemsworth) and Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry), better known as sworn enemies, but once were friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever.

After all of the misses with the live-action films, I was elated to see the franchise go back to its animated roots. The narrative centers on the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron, providing a fresh perspective into their once-harmonious relationship and what went wrong. The film begins with a glimpse of Cybertron in its golden age, showcasing a society bustling with innovation, camaraderie, and mutual respect among the Cybertronians. However, as ideological differences begin to seep in, a rift forms between the two friends, culminating in a tragic series of events that lead to the war we all know.

"Transformers One" artfully balances action with emotional gravitas as it explores themes of friendship, loyalty, and the consequences of change. The screenplay delves into how ambition and power can corrupt even the purest of bonds, presenting Megatron's transformation from hero to villain as a cautionary tale.

Central to the film's success is the depth of its characters. Optimus Prime retains his heroic integrity and unwavering belief in justice, while Megatron's descent into villainy is explored with nuance. The film provides insights into their motivations, making their conflict more poignant. Exploring secondary characters is commendable, enriching the narrative and expanding the universe beyond the two protagonists.

The voice cast's performances are vital in bringing the characters to life in "Transformers One." In addition to Hemsworth and Henry, notable actors such as Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne, and Jon Hamm contribute significantly to the animated characters. Each actor portrays their role with conviction, infusing the animated characters with layers of emotion. Whether it is Optimus's commanding presence or Megatron's underlying anger, the vocal performances resonate, establishing a relatable connection with the characters despite their robotic nature.

The animation in "Transformers One" is truly remarkable. The fully computer-generated visuals meticulously breathe life into Cybertron, presenting its magnificence and the intricate designs of the Transformers. From expansive views of the alien planet to the intricate details in character designs, the visual effects team has established a new benchmark for animated features. Each battle sequence is dynamic, pulsating with kinetic energy that immerses viewers in the action. The vibrant color palette further enhances the film's tone, evoking warmth and tension as the narrative unfolds.

"Transformers One" is a remarkable installment in the Transformers franchise that successfully combines action, emotional depth, and stunning animation. It offers a fresh retelling of the origin story of two of the most iconic characters in pop culture while remaining accessible to newcomers.
