There is a moment early in X-Men ’97 Season 2 that reminded me why this franchise has endured for more than 60 years. It is not the explosive action, the time-travel chaos, or even the arrival of familiar faces from Marvel lore. It is the emotion.
Beneath the vibrant costumes and mutant powers lies a story about family, sacrifice, and the consequences of our choices. Four episodes into its second season, “X-Men: ’ 97” continues to demonstrate that no adaptation captures the essence of the X-Men better than animation.
Picking up where the acclaimed first season left off, the Disney+ series quickly expands its narrative scope. This season connects multiple timelines, weaving together the distant past, present, and future around a story centered on Apocalypse. Fans have awaited this level of attention for En Sabah Nur for years, and the payoff is gratifying. Instead of presenting him as a one-dimensional villain, the series delves into his origins and motivations, adding depth to one of Marvel’s most formidable adversaries.
The emotional core still firmly resides with the characters fans have followed for decades. Cyclops and Jean Grey share some of the season’s most powerful moments as they navigate their complicated future with Nathan. Magneto’s ongoing quest for redemption remains one of the show’s most compelling threads, filled with difficult choices and unexpected developments that challenge everything viewers think they know about the Master of Magnetism.
Visually, “X-Men 97” stands out as one of the best-looking animated series on television. The action sequences are dynamic without being overwhelming, allowing each character’s abilities to shine. Whether it’s a large-scale battle or a quieter, character-driven scene, the animation consistently enhances the storytelling instead of distracting from it.
X-Men ’97” returns to Disney+ on July 1 for a second season.
