Director Dan Trachtenberg continues to show appreciation for one of the greatest science fiction franchises in “Predator: Badlands” from 20th Century Studios. Trachtenberg reunites with “Prey” screenwriter Patrick Aison for the film, based on a story they both developed.
However, on Genna, Dek quickly learns that the planet is remarkably horrifying, presenting an ecological disaster where even the plant life poses a lethal threat. Tempests rage, beasts attack unexpectedly, and flora emerges with spines designed to incapacitate you, making you vulnerable to others that wish to consume you.
Fortunately, he finds an ally in the android Thia (Elle Fanning) from the Weyland-Yutani corporation, who also has her own motives for tracking the Yautja. Thia and Dek soon realize that they must work together not only to survive but also to confront Thia’s twin sister, Tessa, who is determined to achieve her mission by any means necessary.
In essence, director Dan Trachtenberg and screenwriter Patrick Aison have expanded upon what made “Prey” a great addition to the franchise by combining a coming-of-age story with Predator lore. Dek’s journey is relatable, and his banter with Thia is among the film’s best moments. Elle Fanning impresses in her dual role, showcasing a commendable range.
A significant question on fans’ minds is how Trachtenberg will handle the PG-13 rating. Some audiences may have reservations about the character of Bud, a wide-eyed, dog-like primate who accompanies the pair on their adventure. While I can understand why Disney might attempt to promote him as a toy, Bud does play a significant role in the narrative.
When the action does arrive, it delivers what the creative team aims for. At its core, “Predator: Badlands” succeeds in the same manner as “Prey” by effectively blending two genres and showing respect to a beloved franchise.
Final Grade: B+
“Predator: Badlands” has sneak previews tonight and opens in theaters tomorrow.
