Coming from a musical family can sometimes be both a gift and a curse. Thankfully, this week’s Second Listen Sunday artist, Chico DeBarge, falls into the former category. Mr. DeBarge released his fourth solo album, “The Game,” on October 26, 1999. The album’s first single, “Listen to Your Man,” features a reunion with Joe.
DeBarge co-wrote the song with Juanita Stokes and co-produced it with Vada Nobles. Opening with a beatbox by the legendary Doug E. Fresh, the song serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of letting outside negativity seep into your relationship. Chico and Joe sound fantastic, trading vocals, and it’s a shame we never got a full duet album from the two.
The in-demand duo Soulshock & Karlin added their talents to the next single, “Give You What You Want (Fa Sure).” In this seductive track, Chico expresses his eagerness to satisfy his partner. However, the strength of the album lies in Chico’s use of music as therapy. The titular opening track tells the story of an ex-con who wants to do right while the streets keep calling him.
“The Game” isn’t solely focused on the gloom; Chico also crafts plenty of slow jams. “Sexual” speaks for itself, while “When Can I See You Again,” written by Brian McKnight, will resonate with anyone who has enjoyed a special night with someone they’re interested in. Chico also pays homage to his influences, covering Marvin Gaye’s “Til Tomorrow” and his brother El’s “Heart, Mind & Soul.” The song “Everybody Knew But Me” could easily fit on a Stevie Wonder album.
Even the gospel-influenced “Talk About You,” featuring Bobby Brown, showcases Chico’s ability to shift across different music genres. While the album may not have reached the monumental heights of releases from his siblings, it solidified his place as a significant force in late ’90s R&B.
Final Grade: B+
“The Game” is available on all streaming platforms.
