“Fantasy Life" Review: A Quietly Smart Romantic Comedy That Understands Real Chemistry

Matthew Shear delivers an impressive directorial debut with “Fantasy Life,” from Greenwich Entertainment, which he also scripts and stars in. There’s a certain kind of New York-set romantic dramedy that doesn’t chase fireworks—it studies sparks under a microscope. Fantasy Life fits squarely in that lane, and to its credit, it never forces a reaction that isn’t earned. Matthew Shear leads the film as Sam Stein, a recently unemployed paralegal whose panic attack reroutes his life into an unlikely babysitting gig for his psychiatrist’s three granddaughters.

It’s a premise that sounds quirky on paper, but the director and cast treat it with a grounded realism that keeps things from drifting into indie cliché. This film is less about plot mechanics and more about emotional recalibration. Amanda Peet plays Dianne, an actress caught between a stalled career and a marriage that’s hanging on more out of habit than passion. When her husband, a touring rock bassist (Alessandro Nivola), heads overseas, Sam becomes a fixture in her orbit. Their connection is immediate but never overstated.

“Fantasy Life” smartly downplays sexual tension, choosing instead to explore something more layered—shared vulnerability, mental health struggles, and the quiet comfort of being understood. The move to Martha’s Vineyard introduces a full house of personalities—kids, grandparents, and Sam’s own psychiatrist among them. Yet the film never loses its intimacy. It finds its rhythm in conversation, in awkward pauses, in the kind of emotional shifts that feel lived-in rather than written.

“Fantasy Life” by no means is a grand slam, nor is it something I will ever revisit. However, it is a well-placed debut that gets on base and stays with you. The film understands that real chemistry isn’t always explosive. Sometimes, it’s subtle, unresolved, and all the more compelling because of it.

Final Grade: B

“Fantasy Life” is currently in theaters.
